A2Z Series - B Is For 'Bold'

Hi NaiLovelies!

I'm back with the second installment of the A2Z challenge and this week the letter of the alphabet is B and the prompt is Bold.

I had many ideas in my head for this bold themed manicure but the manicure I ended up with was actually the first one which popped into my mind.  I knew I wanted to use a bold and untried polish from my stash so the striking blue fabulousness of Mentality Brute ticked all the boxes!

I applied curved lines to each nail using black, red and white striping polishes.  This is the first time I have ever used striping brushes and striping polishes so please excuse the not so perfect lines - I am sure practice will make almost perfect....

Mentality Brute
Double Top, Topcoat For Glitter - All That Jazz
Black, Red & White Striping Polishes

I painted this manicure on top of my current IBD Just Gel Polish Patchwork manicure which can be seen here

The picture below is a 'behind the scenes' peek of the mid-stage of my Mentality Brute manicure. I really like the single black line, I'm pretty sure you will see this pop up again very soon in a different manicure - after all, I need some more practice at drawing curved lines with the striping brush!

My First Easter Manicure

Happy Easter NaiLovelies!!!!!!

Today I've been dabbling in a little nail art again.  In between a day out  at the not-so-local bowling alley (a.k.a. the kiss of death for long nails!) and cooking up a storm in the kitchen for our Easter Sunday meal, with a spicy Caribbean twist, it has been a hectic day.....But I managed to shoe horn in a manicure to share with you all.

I had a look at my supplies and drew a blank.  So I just pulled out my polishes as I always do when I don't know what the heck I'm doing and took it from there.

Lychee -  Barry M
Butter-Fly Stroke! - Sally Hansen Insta Dr
Cantankerous - Mentality Nail Polish
Beige Blast - Sally Hansen Insta Dri
Bright Orange - Max Factor
HK Girl Topcoat
Swarovski Aurora Borealis Crystals
Gold Oval Studs
Ciate Caviar Beads

I really wanted to enter into the spirit of things and create a manicure.  Alas, without suitable stamping plates or artistic ability, I was stumped for what to do.  I knew I wanted to have yellow in the manicure somewhere....

I'm not really a 'cutesy' kinda gal.  Despite my 'It's Blooming Springtime' manicure last week (which I loved and wore for four days!) my comfort zone isn't really cute stuff like bunnies, eggs and chicks which tend to be the norm for this time of year.

I was trying to find other Easter'ish colours in my collection - apparently I don't do pastels either (something which I plan to change in my gel collection in the not too distant future!).  The first polish I started with was Barry M Lychee which is one of the most pastel colours I own and it's a great neutral.  The rest kinda fell into place....

I'm really pleased with how this manicure turned out, in particular my take on an Easter egg embellished with jewels like an exquisite Faberge egg - created with my limited nail art supplies and practice in creating nail art.

I really like all of the colours and the fact that there is a mixture between high street and indie polishes.  I have a new found love in particular for the Max Factor Bright Orange which despite its tiny bottle applied perfectly.  Cantakerous by Mentality Nail Polish brought all the colours together incredibly well and I never even considered wearing Butter-Fly Stroke or Beige Blast for a manicure before now as they were purchased with the sole intention of stamping, but I was really impressed with these colours - although they did take three and four coats respectively to reach full streak free opacity.

There are still a few days left of my first blog giveaway so please feel free to enter.

Don't miss out as the giveaway closes on 22nd April.

The prizes are a Sensationail Raspberry Wine Starter Kit (UK prize) or a $25 Mentality Nail Polish Gift Certificate (US prize).

It's Blooming Springtime...!

Hi NaiLovelies!

I have something a little different to show you today.

Whilst creating my second ever decal mani, I decided to complicate matters by taking a few photos of the process I followed to achieve this springtime manicure....

1.  I grabbed my trusty bag of CND Shellac Remover Wraps.

2.  Each wrap comes with a removable tab which covers the adhesive tape on the wrap.

3.  During my soak offs I keep all of the tabs from the wraps used, they are great for making decals as they are the perfect size for the stamped image and super easy to peel the decal off once completely dry.

4.  This is what the each tab looks like once removed from the Remover Wraps (I have a stash of these saved up).

5.  I grabbed my trusty MoYou stamping plate which has the tulip image I chose to use for this manicure.  I also used my Magno nails stamper and Wet 'n Wild black creme polish.

6.  I applied a thick coat of topcoat to the shiny side of each of the four tabs (I only used three decals for this manicure but always make at least one extra just incase I mess it up!). I left this for about half an hour before stamping the image.

7.  This image shows how much of the tab is covered in topcoat.  I leave a boarder to make removing the decal easier.

8.  I stamped my chosen image onto the topcoated tab.

9.  Next for the fun part of colouring in!  I make sure to select opaque one-coater polishes so grabbed my trusty Sally Hansen Insta Dri polishes along with a couple of OPI's and Mentality polish.

10.  I coloured in each of the flowers carefully using the polish and a dotting tool placing a drop of polish onto a tile to make the process easier.

11.  Once left to dry for a couple of hours the decal is ready to be removed from the tab ready for use.

12.  I use my pointy tweezers to pull the decal off the tab after loosening around the entire edge with an orange wood stick.

13.  Once removed from the tab I cut off the excess polish using nail scissors.

14.  I applied topcoat to my nail and then quickly yet carefully, applied the decal to the wet topcoated nail and smoothed it onto the nail using the pad of my finger, being sure not to overwork the decal as it softens upon contact with the top-coated nail.

15.  I smooth the tip of the nail using a nail file, acetone on a clean up brush or my finger - whichever is most appropriate for the amount of excess decal.  I also clean up the sidewalls and cuticle area if needed using my clean up brush.

16.  I finished the manicure with a final coat of topcoat.

Mentality Sourball - Base
MoYou Pro XL 12 - Stamped image
Sally Hansen Insta Dri, OPI, Golden Rose & Mentality polishes - For decal infill
Ciate Rapid Dry - Topcoat

I love how this turned out.   I still need a little more practice though!

Don't forget to enter the 'Giveaway'.  Ends on 22nd April 12am (GMT).

Sourball by Mentality Nail Polish

Hi NaiLovelies!

I am sharing another stunning polish with you today. This pretty little number is Sourball by Mentality Nail Polish which is another from the Candy Jelly Holo collection.

Sourball is a mint green polish with a holographic finish.  The holo payback is quite subtle (unless in direct sunshine) unlike Gumdrop which has a stronger holo glow to it (as it happens Gumdrop is my absolute favorite from the collection).  I really like the softness of this colour and it is unlike any other polish in my collection.

As with all the other Mentality polishes I got on famously with the brush which helped the polish apply like a dream giving me trouble whatsoever.

The finish is reminiscent of a frost polish but not at all brush-strokey, the polish flows effortlessly onto the nail.

I've been wearing Sourball since Thursday evening so it has been 2 days between painting and taking these photos.  I am pleased with how well this polish wears - much like the other Mentality polishes I own it has great wearability.

Sourball - by Mentality Nail Polish (2 coats)
Topcoat - Seche Vite
Soak off gel basecoat - Gelish Vitagel Recovery

I am really impressed with the versatility of the Candy Holo Collection and I was able to achieve the  leadlight/glazing technique with these polishes (thinned with a little topcoat).

Click Image for more Facebook photos.  For the leaves I used Sourball, for the purple flower I used Jade Facsino Violetta and Mentality Gumdrop.  for the Pink flower I used Mentality Bon Bon, Marmalade and Taffy in the centre.

Check out my Facebook page for more pictures.

I purchased Sourball and my other new Mentality Holos from UK distributor Sally Magpies.  I brought this one for full price before realising that she was offering a 50% discount on all Mentality holos (I hot footed it back to her website and brought the rest of the Candy Jelly Holos after discovering that little nugget of info the following day!)

Don't forget I am am holding a giveaway which ends on 22nd April.

The prizes are a Sensationail Raspberry Wine Starter Kit (for UK entrants) and a $25 Mentality Polish Gift Certificate (US entrants)

Offbeat by Mentality Nail Polish

Hi NaiLovelies!

It feels like it’s been quite a while since I last posted a swatch of a regular nail polish and even longer since I posted a mani of an indie brand.  So, without further ado I have a swatch of some holo goodness by Mentality Nail Polish, Offbeat.  It’s a beauty!

Offbeat is from the Mentality Dark Variant Holo collection.  It is blackened teal however, on me it leans straight up blue, and a really gorgeous shade of blue at that.

On my nails there is a real stormy quality to the colour of this polish which makes it a very easy blue/teal for me to wear.  So, teal-ish blue or blue-ish teal, I don’t mind whichever it is as I have nuff love for it nonetheless.

The application of this polish is like the other Mentality polishes I own – hassle free.  It is uber-creamy and is very pigmented.  In fact, I think this could be a one-coater, but my preference is to apply two coats to ensure full coverage.

I find that I have to work quickly with this and the mattes as they dry quickly.  I have to remember not to overwork the polish (it’s not gel polish Tracey!) in order to prevent dragging.  The brush is a delight to work with.  For me these brushes make the whole experience even better – I could go on and on about how much I love the brushes but I don’t want the polish to start getting all jealous so I’ll just leave it at – yeah, the  brush is nice!!

The polish dries quickly and has a satiny, low gloss finish which is transformed to shiny wonderfulness with a single coat of topcoat.

My bottle of Mentality Offbeat is from my first ever order purchased last year. Along with this one, I picked up Kablooey, Distinct, Resilience, Tempest, Monsoon and my beloved Gumdrop from the Candy Holos collection.  I still have a few untrieds in my collection (despite using some for a spot of stamping) so I will be back with swatches of those soon - along with the 7 new ones I purchased recently from Sally Magpies adding 5 more of the Candy Jelly Holos to my collection, and a few others....

[Would be rude not to seeing as they have 50% discount at the moment - visit Sally Magpies Facebook page for the discount code].

The Newbies meet the Trailblazers!

I love all the indie polishes I own. So much so, I just can’t bear to swatch, remove and move on…. I need to actually wear these beauties so it takes a while to work them into my polish/gel rotation.

However, keep your eyes on the blog, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates on my new manis over the next few days as I will be swatching like a beast.  I’ll be showing you some Mentality polishes to whet your appetite for those on offer which you could get your hands on by entering my giveaway.

The prizes are a $25 Mentality Nail Polish Gift Certificate for entrants requiring US shipping and a Sensationail Raspberry Wine Starter Kit for those requiring UK shipping.

These are great prizes and remember, you’ve gotta be in it to win it!  So, enter and share the link with your friends, family and followers!

Good luck everyone!!!

Silent Sunday: Mentality Gradient Stamping

Hi NaiLovelies!

Who am I kidding, I couldn't be silent or even semi-silent if I tried!

Instead I have a 'Sunday Show & Tell' for you today.  Not a review, just an opportunity to post a shed load of pictures of the same mani in one place.  Don't forget to click on the images if you want to see them larger!

This is Mentality Kablooey, Distinct and Offbeat stamped onto my IBD Perfectly Paisley manicure using MoYou Pro XL 06 plate (which is fast becoming my favourite MoYou image plate) and the gradient stamping menthod.

As you can see, I also added a cute little snake nail charm which I purchased from Hex Nail Jewelry.  I am really impressed with the charms I brought and I love how they can add a little something extra to a manicure.

I love how this turned out.  Thanks Manic Talons for making me realise that I should give this a try.  You're right, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be and I love the results!

Here is a picture in natural sunlight to show some of the holo fabulousness from all of the Mentality polishes I used today.

Perfectly Paisley - IBD Just Gel Polish
Pro XL 06 Image Plate - MoYou London
Snake Nail Charm - Hex Nail Jewelry
Topcoat - OPI

This is the image I used for the stamping.

I saw a post earlier this week by UK Nail Runner (she has such fab nails!) which low and behold informed me that I can easily purchase my beloved Mentality polishes in the UK from Sally Magpies!!!  You don't know how pleased I am about this little nugget of information, no more breaking a sweat waiting for international mail with Royal Mail's newly imposed restrictions on nail polish!
